Academy of Sciences.

After a failed attempt a while ago to go to the California Academy of Sciences for their quarterly free day (read about what we did instead here), this time we made sure we arrived bright and early!

It's definitely worth trying to make it to the museum on one of the free days - otherwise it's $25 for adults.
It was really busy when we arrived - we got there before 10, although the museum doesn't open until 11.
Luckily the queue got moving quickly!

The Academy of Sciences is in the eastern part of  Golden Gate Park, opposite the De Young Museum, which I've been to before (read here).
The building itself is really modern, with a lot of skylights which make it bright and airy!

Inside, the museum is like a cross between the Natural History Museum and the Science Museum in London. Though the free day is obviously popular, it wasn't any busier than these museums are on a normal day!

We thought we'd scare ourselves and go in the Earthquake simulator.
I hope I don't have to feel a real one while I live here - the city of San Francisco lies on the San Andreas Fault line, so it's prone to quakes!

Inside the rockin' house.

Afterwards we trekked into the rainforest...

... spot the butterflies!...

...and then we dived into the huge aquarium.

Poking the anemones.

Before we left we headed up to the Living Roof, which is completely sustainable - the roof provides light and air conditioning to the museum.
The twin peaks are also meant to look like the Twin Peaks of San Francisco, which can be seen in the background!

Panoramic view across to the De Young, from the balcony of the Academy of Sciences - we caught the only bit of sunshine before the fog rolled in!

The next free day is on the 2nd of June.
My advice is get there early!
Here's the website.
