It's strange when you live in a new area - as well as realising some of the things you say now have no meaning, you learn a lot of new words. Here are my top five so far:
'Sup Brah' - this isn't really a San Fran thing, it's more a SoCal surfer-dude greeting. Like 'What's up, bro' but more a LOT more laid-back.
'Hullo?' - this has turned into a bit of a joke. But basically it can be used to agree OR disagree with someone, or to draw attention to your point. It has far too many uses, but that's the beauty.
'Hella' - this is the hot SF word of the moment. Means 'really' or 'a lot'.
'Dank' - means disgusting.
'Ratchet' - also meaning disgusting, but more likely to be used to refer to a person.
A conversation goes something like this:
'Sup brah? Yo, that girl is hella ratchet.'
'Um, hullo?! Dank.'
I know, I'm practically a local.
